How it all started?!
Q&A
with Adva Bruner
Ripple Yoga Wear’s Founder & Head Designer
# 1 How did you get interested in creating a recovery-bra for breast cancer survivors?
“It all started one day after my morning swim in the sea. In the showers, I met a remarkable woman named Jill. She had undergone a single mastectomy without reconstruction, and we began talking about her experience. She shared with me the challenges and complexities of each stage of treatment and recovery. From there, I started meeting one-on-one with several other women who had also gone through breast cancer, all of whom I connected with through Jill.”
# 2 What were the main challenges these women faced?
“Several key concerns came up:
1. Discomfort
throughout the treatment process with the bras currently available. During this period, they need support, but the fabric must also feel gentle on their skin because their bodies are in a state of heightened sensitivity.
2. Even
after treatment, there’s still a lot of sensitivity, so bras that are too tight or made from synthetic materials were unpleasant for most of them.
3. Some women expressed a desire to switch to more “clean” fabrics that wouldn’t introduce toxins into their bodies after their illness.
4.Another important issue was
prostheses. Some women use them and need bras that allow for the insertion of a prosthesis.”
5.Trouble with movement. After the surgery it’s problematic to find the right sports wear that will support their new body and sensitivity.
# 3 What’s your vision for this bra?
“The goal is to create a bra that addresses all the needs these women shared with me and is comfortable for various activities, including sports. It should provide enough coverage, yet still be soft, gentle, and flexible. It must also have room for inserting a prosthesis for those who need it. Of course, like all Ripple clothing, the bra will be made from natural, toxin-free fabrics that are safe and supportive.”
# 4 Why is it important for you to raise awareness about breast cancer?
“I know many women in my life who have been affected by breast cancer, and it’s very important for me to normalize the conversation around it. Early detection is truly life-saving in this case, and the more we talk about it, the more women will get checked regularly. This will ultimately help save lives.
But most importantly -
movement.
I
want women NOT to stop moving. Moving your body is
ESSENTIAL
for women’s wellbeing. When you stop moving, somehow - life stops.
As well, at Ripple my design philosophy is guided by values of free and empowering
movement, and creating products that are beneficial for both the planet and our health. With this project, it’s crucial for us to understand the needs of these women and help them continue to move and take care of themselves.”
# 5 What is the current stage of development?
“We’re done with the research and a step away from developing the first prototype. The next stage will be sewing the initial model and having women try it out, gathering feedback, and refining the design until we have a product we’re all satisfied with. Hopefully ready by next summer.”
# 6 What are your hopes for the campaign?
“This bra is designed to support women's recovery journey, so I hope this campaign will help fund the continued development of the bra and, perhaps, through it, we’ll hear from more women about their specific challenges and needs. We want to ensure the bra meets the needs of as many women as possible.”
Thank you!
